A game’s sound doesn’t often grab the headlines, but with the release of the SEGA blockbuster, House of the Dead: Overkill, PitStop Productions have placed themselves firmly in the top tier of Game Audio. The developer, Headstrong Games approached PitStop to provide script development, sound design and voice production for the zombie gore-fest. The results speak for themselves:
“Overkill features one of the best game soundtracks in recent years, and each mission has fantastic vintage-style themes, with guitar riffs that will stick with you long after you've set your Wii Remote down. Even better special remixes of the in-game songs are unlocked by completing missions, further endearing Overkill's tunes into your heart. The voice acting is equally top-notch, and every character is fun and memorable..”
“..brilliant writing and voice acting”
“The star of The House of the Dead: Overkill is the unabashed writing, which finds gold in spoofing the genre with a brazen effectiveness. The parade of F-bombs and one-liners fit in perfect harmony with the grindhouse presentation. Tarantino fans shouldn’t miss this clever, curse-heavy shooter.”
“intelligently written and original”
“And the music is fabulous, surely a soundtrack of the year candidate; note-perfect parodies of vintage funk and rockabilly, with thumping, dirty electro remixes for the boss battles.”
“A special mention has to go to the music, which is utterly fantastic; it mainly consists of new tracks that fit in well with the funk-horror setting, but there are also throwbacks to the other House of the Dead games. Give us some headphones and the soundtrack and we'd be happy to listen to it on its own.”
“Sound: 10/10 - The voice work is hilarious and the music is an orgasm for the ears”
“Excellent soundtrack… The script is genuinely funny”
“well-written and well-acted”
“In-game audio is a complete treat. We already covered the voice acting, but Headstrong and Sega went all out here to ensure that the sound was superb.” “This is one soundtrack that we'd love to have on CD”
“Hilarious soundtrack. If you have young kids around you may want to take them out of the room, but for the mature audience, you'll be laughing out loud to this music.”
“The music is simply perfect alongside the rest of Overkill's presentation, and you can unlock tunes for playback in the game's jukebox. The voicework, though, is truly the aural centrepiece..”
The music is incredible – you’re slaughtering the undead to slick, funky tunes that fit the 70s comedy/horror/schlock aesthetic perfectly. The voice acting is superb – it’s rare that a game actually has me laughing instead of rolling my eyes, but Overkill has the goods.
This fun is further intensified by the superb music; on the menus and screens before the bullets even start flying you are treated to country and western songs that seem to be variations on what is said during cut scenes; the developers have obviously spent a large amount of time and money on recording unique songs specifically for Overkill (if all developers took this much care then game music as a whole would improve substantially).
The soundtrack of Overkill, however, is damn awesome. There's a ton of original tracks with full-blown vocals designed for the game, and they're all either catchy or absolutely hilarious to listen to.
